Sex, Tech and Addiction: The Effect of the Internet and Social Media on Relationship Intimacy and Sexual Addiction

Modern technology continues its generational and cultural influence, as we are all drawn into increasingly sophisticated and immediately accessible online content and interconnectivity. While many aspects of this evolutionary process are both useful and even essential for successful business and social interaction, increasing numbers of clients are also seeking treatment for addictive and problematic patterns of Internet sexual and romantic behavior that simply did not exist a mere decade ago. Today there is little question that problem addictive online sexual activity is costing some their jobs, families, spouses, while also contributing to drug and alcohol relapse. This talk will offer clinical insight and workable solutions for men and women struggling with Internet- sex and pornography addictions, review the status of this diagnosis in the DSM 5, while providing an specific overview of these new technologies that are evoking age old problems.

An internationally acknowledged clinician and author of Sex Addiction 101: A Basic Guide to Healing from Sex, Love, and Porn Addiction, and Cruise Control: Understanding Sex Addiction in Gay Men; he also co-authored Closer Together, Further Apart: The Effect of Technology and the Internet on Parenting, Work, and Relationships and Always Turned On: Sex Addiction in the Digital Age. He has served as a subject expert on the intersection of human intimacy and digital technology for multiple media outlets including The Oprah Winfrey Network, The New York Times, The Los Angeles Times, The Daily Beast, and CNN, among many others. He is a regular contributor to several pop and clinical websites, including Psychology Today, Huffington Post, Psych Central, Counselor Magazine, and Addiction.com, among others.
