Treatment of Complex Trauma: A Sequenced Relationship Based Approach
Presented by Christine Courtois, PHD, ABPP

This presentation will provide a description of a meta-model for treating complex trauma. It includes a recommended sequence of treatment in three primary phases, each with associated tasks. The treatment is founded on an emphasis on safety to begin de-conditioning the stress response. Since posttraumatic reactions inherently involve mind-body reactions, the treatment emphasis must be on both. Evidence-based and empirically-supported treatment strategies will be discussed, along with the recommendations made in various sets of treatment guidelines.

10:45am-12:15pm
Food, Addiction and Recovery: A New Approach to Healing the Body-Mind
Presented by Pamela Peeke, MD, MPH, FACP

Exciting new evidence-based science has emerged which outlines the essential and pivotal role healthy nutrition plays in the achievement and maintenance of addiction recovery. Research funded by the NIH’s National Institute of Drug Abuse has demonstrated a critical and similar affect of drugs and specific food products on the brain’s reward center and prefrontal cortex. Specifically, there are transfer addictions from substances to hyper palatable (sugary/fatty/salty) foods. Addictive eating behaviors co-occur with mood and binge eating disorders. This groundbreaking science will be presented along with assessment tools and an integrative nutrition and lifestyle plan that practitioners can implement to guide their clients.
