Suicide is a leading cause of death among those with substance use disorders. A substance use disorder and a co-occurring psychiatric diagnosis each contribute to the risk of suicide and their interaction complicates treatment and worsens clinical outcome.
Dr. David Sack will share some insight into our current knowledge about the causal relationships between primary psychiatric disorders and substance use disorders and reviews key factors that influence suicide risk in depression, bipolar disorder and post-traumatic stress disorder. He will also focus on specific treatment approaches that therapists and counselors can take to reduce the risk of suicide in this population.
